Restaurants in Dengfeng

For the adventurous, a nightmarket sets up at the corner of Zhongyue Dajie and Caishi Jie, a block east of Song Shan Zhong Lu, where you can eat your fill of spicy kabobs, stir-fries, and the local noodles, daoxiao mian. The Jinguan Mianbao Xidian Fang on the western side of Song Shan Zhong Lu, just north of Shaolin Dadao, has a wide selection of breads and pastries and is open from 6:30am to 9:30pm. Just up the street from the bakery is the small Xiangji Wang, selling fried chicken. A favorite restaurant frequented by foreigners who live at Shaolin is Fuyuan Nong Jia Le (tel. 01390/381-1423; 500m/1,625 ft. to the right after you leave the temple; 8am-10pm). The proprietor, Mr. Chiu (aka "Uncle Tom," as he's been dubbed by foreigners), makes delicious fresh-cut fries, sweet-and-sour chicken and fish, kung pao chicken, and potatoes and chicken. If you can't find the place, give him a call and he'll pick you up in his trishaw.
