Kayaking

The calm waters here, flecked with islands and home to abundant sea and bird life, are some of the most renowned for kayaking in all B.C. On Denman, Denman Hornby Canoes and Kayaks, 4005 East Rd. (tel. 250/335-0079; www.denmanpaddling.ca), has rentals and half- and full-day guided excursions. One of their most popular trips is to Sandy Island, a favorite destination of sea kayakers off the northern tip of Denman Island. Called Tree Island by locals, the island is accessible only by boat or, at low tide, by foot. With a mere 33 hectares (81 acres), the small island is essentially a broad sand spit peppered with trees; in summer, the shallow water gets beautifully warm for swimming.

On Hornby, arrange guided tours or rent kayaks from Hornby Ocean Kayaks (tel. 250/335-0448; www.hornbyisland.com/Kayaking), near the Central Road school building.
