Recommended in Sundance is the Bear Lodge, 218 Cleveland St., on Wyo. 14 at Business Loop I-90 (P.O. Box 912), Sundance, WY 82729 (www.bearlodgemotel.com; tel. 307/283-1611; fax 307/283-2537). Another good choice is the Best Western Inn at Sundance, 2719 E. Cleveland, at I-90 exit 189 (P.O. Box 927), Sundance, WY 82729 (tel. 800/238-0965 or 307/283-2800; fax 307/283-2727). There are two moderately priced restaurants, open year-round, across the street from the Best Value Inn Bear Lodge: Aro Restaurant, 203 Cleveland St. (tel. 307/283-2000), is open daily from 7am to 9pm in summer, with slightly shorter hours in winter. It serves a home-style American menu of sandwiches, burgers, and steak, plus a few Mexican dishes, with lunch prices from $4 to $8 and dinner prices from $8 to $20. Higbee's Café, 101 N. 3rd St. (tel. 307/283-2165), generally serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, plus dinner on Wednesday. It offers homemade soups and a variety of sandwiches, with most prices from $5 to $7, and serves breakfast anytime.

Immediately outside of the monument's boundaries, climbing guru Frank Sanders runs the Devils Tower Lodge, P.O. Box 66, Devils Tower, WY 82714 (www.devilstowerlodge.com; tel. 888/314-5267 or 307/467-5267), an eclectic yet nicely appointed four-room B&B in the former superintendent's residence; there's also an adjacent cottage. The rooms all have private bathrooms; the facilities are geared toward climbers, and the communal mood makes guests feel as if they're staying in a home instead of an inn. Room rates ($125-$200 double; $250 cottage) include full breakfast; dinners (about $12) are available upon request. Checks and credit cards (MC, V) are accepted.

In Hulett, try the Hulett Motel, 202 Main St., Hulett, WY 82720 (www.hulettmotel.com; tel. 307/467-5220). Double rates are $65 to $95; major credit cards (DISC, MC, V) are accepted. Rooms are well maintained, and there's also a row of trim and tidy cabins on the Belle Fourche River.

Camping

Located a mile from the monument's headquarters, Belle Fourche Campground is open from April through October and rarely fills up except around the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August. The campground's 50 sites accommodate RVs (up to 35 ft. long) and tents on a first-come, first-served basis. Each campsite has a cooking grill, table, and nearby drinking water. There are no showers, RV hookups, or dump station. Sites costs $12 per night; there are three group sites, which cost $2 per person per night, with a six-person minimum. The adjacent Valley View Trail skirts a giant prairie dog town. The campground's amphitheater offers excellent interpretive ranger programs.

Those looking for a commercial campground with RV hookups and hot showers will find the Devils Tower KOA, P.O. Box 100, Devils Tower, WY 82714 (www.devilstowerkoa.com; tel. 800/562-5785 or 307/467-5395), just outside the monument entrance.
