Dorchester Attractions
To learn more about the Victorian author Thomas Hardy, you can join in organized walks that follow in the footsteps of his novels in and around the Dorchester area. They are conducted April to October by the Thomas Hardy Society (tel. 01305/251501; www.hardysociety.org). These walks and tours take up a full day and are followed by lectures on Hardy and readings of his works, both poetry and prose.

Hardy's Cottage
Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 at Higher Bockhampton. His home, now a National Trust property, may be visited. Approach the cottage on foot -- it's a 10-minute walk -- after parking your vehicle in the space provided in the woods.
