Helen’s Restaurant
Much expanded a few years back after a devastating fire, this cut-above-the-rest diner has a long history and is one of New England’s premier places to eat pie. (And, yes, there was a Helen.) You can get pork chops, fried fish, liver and onions, meatloaf, and other American-style square meals. But better to come for breakfast, to indulge in a plate of Helen’s impossibly fluffy pancakes, chock-full of blueberries (the pride of Machias).
Regardless of the meal, save room for the amazingly creamy and fruity pies; strawberry rhubarb or blueberry, when in season, are out of this world, but chocolate cream, banana cream, or just about anything else will satisfy the sweet tooth.
There’s another Helen’s on the strip just north of Ellsworth.
