When you enter Old Town through Pile Gate, one of the first things you will see on Stradun is the Great Onofrio Fountain. Similarly, entering from Ploče Gate you will immediately notice the Small Onofrio Fountain. Construction on both commenced in 1438, designed by Italians Onofrio della Cava and Pietro di Martino to bring drinking water into town via an aqueduct from the River Dubrovačka, some 11km (7 miles) away. The larger fountain is domed and rimmed by 16 carved stone heads, which spout water from their mouths. The smaller fountain is decorated with carved dolphins. The water is perfectly good to drink, and on hot summer days, many visitors fill up their empty bottles at the two fountains.
