RIP Hotel Missoni. The Italian fashion house swept into town in 2009, rolling out its signature stripes and bold zigzags. Stubble-jawed doormen in bespoke kilts and Prosecco on tap turned this modish modern building into the most glamorous spot in town. However, Missoni bowed out in 2014, and the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group re-crowned the five-star design hotel the George & Victoria with a nod to the area's royal heritage. Local design talent was drafted in to put a Scottish stamp on the hotel: Fashion designer Judy R Clark and 21st-century kilt legend Howie Nicholsby redesigned the uniforms while Glasgow-based Timorous Beasties was put in charge of the crockery and linen. The re-naming of the rooms "Brave"–style (wee, bonnie, braw, and muckle) might have been a step too far, however. One Italian fixture thankfully not erased was Cucina, the fabulous restaurant set up by Giorgio Locatelli—and the Prosecco on tap also got a stay of execution.
