On the route between the Petén Province and Río Dulce lies a wonderful isolated ecolodge, Finca Ixobel (www.fincaixobel.com; tel. 502/5410-4307), which is about 100km (62 miles) away from both Flores and Río Dulce. Accommodations include a campground, dorm rooms, and private thatch-roof bungalows. Plus, there's an inviting lake for swimming and plenty of nearby rainforests, caves, and rivers to explore.
A few very inexpensive options, catering to the backpacker crowd, are right in El Remate. I recommend simply walking around to see which one best fits your fancy and budget. One good option is Hotel Mon Ami (www.hotelmonami.com; tel. 502/7928-8413).
