Duran Hotel & Restaurant

The most famous hotel in town, a short walk from the Teatre-Museu, is itself something of a Dalí museum. The story goes that the mischievous artist would invite friends to dine, and when the bill arrived would offer to pay with a cheque. He would then scribble a sketch on the back, calculating that the restaurateur would hang onto a Dalí original rather than cash the cheque. While there’s no definitive record of him pulling that stunt in his hometown, there are plenty of pictures of him dining here, signed menus, and Dalí originals gracing the walls. The ornate dining room remains a popular place for a well-dressed celebration and offers a good lunchtime menu that changes weekly. Expect classic dishes like salt baked sea bream and wild boar stew, presented in traditional-sized portions.

The hotel, in the newer wing of the property, is run with brisk efficiency. Its guest rooms have wooden floors and that lovely, just-cleaned aroma.
