Mesón Asador Castell 4

There must be hundreds of inns across Spain that look like this one—dark wood furnishings, ornamental wine barrels, Gothic script—but if you crave an old-style Castilian blow-out, you’ve come to the right place. You can choose tapas, and everything will be just as you’d expect: Ibérico ham, sizzling garlic prawns, spicy patatas bravas. Or you can tackle an enormous Galician steak (txuletón de buey) with fries, or a crackling-topped chunk of roast suckling pig (cochinillo asado) for two. The accompanying wines are great value, and the owner will drop by periodically to check everything is going well. As the menu states with admirable candor: classic dishes for those who don’t like surprises.
