This trip will expose you to Fiji's diversity by taking you all the way around Viti Levu from Nadi to Coral Coast, Pacific Harbour, Suva, and Rakiraki. The most convenient means of traveling the island is by car, which allows maximum flexibility and lets you get off the beaten path. You can also ride the Feejee Experience, a backpacker-oriented bus that circles the island daily with stops at attractions and inexpensive accommodations. Public buses also circle Viti Levu via the Queen's and King's roads, but you will have to change buses in Suva and Lautoka.

Days 1-2: Exploring the Coral Coast

From Nadi drive south to the Coral Coast, stopping at the Momi Guns for a look at the World War II battery and a gorgeous view across Nadi Bay; the Kalevu South Pacific Cultural Centre for a glimpse into Fijian culture; and at Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park for an example of its more interesting geology. On Day 2 visit Kula Eco Park to meet Fiji's interesting wildlife, and hike to a waterfall with Adventures in Paradise Fiji. Catch an evening show featuring the "fire walkers" from Beqa Island.

Days 3-4: Rafting the Navua River

Pacific Harbour is the most convenient base from which to go rafting on the Navua River, either on a bilibili or over white waters in the gorges with the excellent Rivers Fiji. On Day 4 visit the country's best cultural center at the Arts Village, and go flying through a rainforest canopy with ZIP Fiji.

Day 5: Strolling Around Suva

Once in Suva, take a walking tour of downtown, ending at the excellent Fiji Museum. The lunchtime Fijian fare at the Old Mill Cottage, next to the U.S. Embassy, is among the country's best.

Days 6-7: Rakiraki

You'll spend at least half of Day 6 driving or riding via the King's Road from Suva to Rakiraki, on the northern tip of Viti Levu. The road follows the Wainbuka River through the mountains and emerges on the north shore at picturesque Viti Levu Bay. Once in Rakiraki spend the afternoon exploring nearby Vaileka, the area's predominately Indian commercial center. Spend the afternoon at Volivoli Beach, one of Fiji's best and home to the inexpensive Volivoli Beach Resort. Rakiraki itself is a small Fijian village where you can stay at the Tanoa Rakiraki Hotel, Fiji's last remaining colonial-era accommodations. On Day 7 head back to Nadi. The central mountains will be off to your left as you pass through the Yaqara Cattle Ranch, home of the famous Fiji Water, and the predominately Indian towns of Tavua and Ba.
