Campgrounds

North of Florence are the first of this region's many campgrounds, Sutton and Alder Dune, both of which are operated by the Forest Service. Just outside Florence at the Siuslaw River's north jetty is the relatively quiet Harbor Vista County Park (tel. 541/682-2000; www.co.lane.or.us/parks/harbor.htm); with nice campsites and day-use areas, it's an alternative to crowded Honeyman State Park. South of Florence, you'll find more than a dozen Forest Service campgrounds and three state-park campgrounds within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. With two lakes, swimming areas, sand dunes, and shady forests, Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park, just a few miles south of Florence, is one of the most popular state parks in Oregon and stays full throughout the summer. Just south of here you'll find the Siltcoos Recreation Area, where Lagoon Campground and Waxmyrtle Campground are the best choices. Carter Lake Campground, on a popular swimming and boating lake, is another quiet choice in this area. The Tahkenitch Campground, however, is probably the best in the area. It's set in the forest on the edge of the dunes. South of Reedsport and Winchester Bay, you'll find William M. Tugman State Park (tel. 541/888-4902; www.oregon.gov/oprd/parks) at the south end of Eel Lake. Eel Creek Campground, adjacent to the Umpqua Dunes, is a quiet choice down at the southern end of the national recreation area.
