Wilderness is always peaceful -- even in peak season -- and conveniently situated within striking distance of the Klein Karoo and day trips to Knysna and surrounds. But nothing good stays secret in an area this popular, and as a result there's been an explosion in accommodations options, particularly on the beach. In addition to the two reviewed below, consider the ocean-facing rooms at Whales Way (tel. 044/877-0482; www.whalesway.co.za; high season R1,000-R2,400; low season R950-2,000). Note that a small avenue separates you from the beach. Another heavily decorated but luxurious beach option is Xanadu (tel. 044/877-0022; www.xanadu-wilderness.co.za; R1,000-R3,000 double). Lashings of gilt, heavy drapes, and padded headboards are offset by the sumptuous location right on the beach (and the presidential suite really is outrageously outfitted). Just down the road, the Great White Beach House (tel. 044/877-1084; www.greatwhitebb.co.za; high season R1,100-R1,360 double; no children under 16) takes the decor to the other extreme: This is a sharply sterile, tiled offering with extreme views and direct beach access; the Musselcracker and Oyster Catcher suites are the most appealing.
