A fortress dating from the Baekje Kingdom, it was originally made of mud but was renovated to stone in the 17th century, during the Joseon Dynasty. Originally called Unjinseong, its name was changed at that time. If you can visit on a Saturday from April to October (excluding July-Aug), you can see the Unjinseong Guard-Changing Ceremony every hour from 2 to 8pm. A re-creation of the Baekje ceremony, the costumes and props are almost near replicas of the old style.

In the nearby Gongju Fortress Park, the Geumgang International Arts of Nature Festival happens annually for 50 days in August and September. There are art installations, temporary outdoor sculptures, seminars, and performances.
