The American writer Washington Irving was lucky enough to lodge within the Alhambra for several months in 1829. That privilege is sadly no longer available, but there are two places where you can stay within the walls of the palace complex—and this is the more luxurious option. See Hotel América if you’d like to wander the grounds after the crowds have gone without paying a fortune. For both lodgings you'll need to plan to reserve months in advance, but bear in mind that both lodgings are inconvenient for visiting the rest of Granada. You’ll need a bus or taxi to take you back up the hill at night.
This is Spain’s most exclusive and expensive parador. Set in a sand-colored 15th century monastery overlooking the gardens of the Generalife, it is peaceful and magical. The public areas feature shaded courtyards with fountains and ancient tiles. The guest rooms and restaurant are contemporary, subtly echoing the decorative style of the Alhambra.
