The minimalist design of these low-slung, concrete structures was once decried for sullying the South Rim, but these sibling lodges are apt for their setting in that they don't overwhelm the surroundings. Better yet, the canyon-side rooms offer stunning vistas of the Grand Canyon for less than half the price of the renowned view suites next door at El Tovar. The rooms at both lodges were upgraded in 2011–12 with a contemporary style and include black-and-white photos of canyon landscapes, flatscreen TVs, and labyrinth-patterned carpeting. Most rooms have two queen beds, and the cinderblock walls make for a quieter place to sleep than their thin-walled counterparts in other park lodgings.
