There are also no restaurants within the park. Aside from the Salt Flat Cafe, 23 miles west of the park visitor center on U.S. 62/180 (tel. 915/964-2838; open for breakfast and lunch only), the closest dining possibilities we recommend are in Carlsbad.

For picnics, you'll find a variety of stores in the city of Carlsbad, including an Albertson's grocery store, 808 N. Canal St., at West Church Street (tel. 575/885-2161), which has a well-stocked deli and bakery.
