The Hunter Valley is far more expensive on weekends and during public holidays than on weekdays. Room prices jump significantly, and some properties insist on a 2-night stay. It's worth checking out the information board in the Wine Country Visitors Information Centre for special deals, including self-contained accommodations, cottages, resorts, and guesthouses.

In Cessnock -- Staying in Cessnock is a good idea if you don't have a car and are relying on local tour companies to pick you up and show you around the area.

Try a B&B

The Hunter Valley has plenty of moderately priced bed and breakfast options. Among them is the Hunter Valley Bed & Breakfast, 1443 Wine Country Dr., North Rothbury (tel. 02/4938 2193; www.huntervalleybedandbreakfast.com.au). Rooms cost A$135 Sunday to Thursday and A$195 on Friday and Saturday nights. Rates include a cooked breakfast.

Bunking Down in a Caravan

If you happen to be touring the country in a caravan (also known as a camper or recreational vehicle), the Valley Vineyard Tourist Park, on Mount View Road on the way to the vineyards (tel./fax 02/4990 2573; www.valleyvineyard.com.au), offers reasonably comfortable accommodations with space for your caravan. It has a range of cabins costing from A$95 to A$130 for two people. Prices are more expensive on weekends, and during NSW school holidays. Powered sites for your RV cost A$30 to A$60 per night and camping costs A$30 to A$45 a night. There is a restaurant, a campers' kitchen, and a swimming pool on site.
