Restaurants in Indianapolis
You'll find many dining options in the Circle Centre Mall. Chains such as Palomino Euro Bistro and the Alcatraz Brewing Co. are consistent with most of what you'll find in the downtown area. The old City Market, 222 E. Market St. (tel. 317/634-9266), has been revitalized with many new restaurants and food stands opening. It's a good place to grab a bite if you're downtown. An outdoor farmers' market is open Wednesday (10am-1:30pm).
And while chain restaurants and your typical American fare make up the bulk of the Indy dining scene, the city does have a fair selection of world cuisine. In Broad Ripple, check out Indy's Indian food outpost, Shalimar, 1043 Broad Ripple Ave. (tel. 317/465-1100; www.shalimarindianapolis.com), or Thai Café, 1041 Broad Ripple Ave. (tel. 317/722-1008; www.indythaicafe.com). If you're up for a bit of a drive to the northeast side, Ma Ma's Restaurant, 8867 Pendleton Pike (tel. 317/897-0808), serves great Korean food. Taj of India, 5929 E. 82nd St. (tel. 317/578-4400), on the north side, is the perfect place to grab a fantastic meal after a day wandering the Castleton Square mall. On the northwest side, try Udupi Café, 4225 Lafayette Rd. (tel. 317/299-2127), tucked away down a long hall in a strip mall, and nearby Abyssinia, 5352 W. 38th St. (tel. 317/299-0608; www.abyssiniarestaurant.com), serving Indian (all vegetarian) and Ethiopian, respectively; both are located just a bit west of the Museum of Art. For sushi, try H2O Sushi, 1912 Broad Ripple Ave. (tel. 317/254-0677; www.h2osushibar.com), or FortyFive°, 765 Massachusetts Ave. (tel. 317/634-4545; www.fortyfiveindy.com).
Also recommended are Bazbeaux Pizza, 811 E. Westfield Blvd. (tel. 317/255-5711; www.bazbeaux.com) and 334 Massachusetts Ave., downtown (tel. 317/636-7662), for gourmet pizza; Mama Carolla's, 1031 E. 54th St. (tel. 317/259-9412; www.mamacarollas.com), for neighborhood Italian in a renovated house; or Yat's, 5363 N. College Ave. (tel. 317/253-8817; www.yatscajuncreole.com), 659 Massachusetts Ave., downtown (tel. 317/686-6380), and 8352 E. 96th St. (tel. 317/585-1792), for a heaping plate of cheap ($5-$6) Cajun food.

Bluebeard
Named for a novel by local son Kurt Vonnegut, Bluebeard may be the best restaurant in Indianapolis right now. It has a décor that delights: all exposed bricks and bric-a-brac (like typewriters and architectural elements meant to evoke the site's 1920s origins). And the staff is…$$$Around Town - American
Café Patachou
This lunch and breakfast cafe maintains its popularity due to Bruce Steckler's consistent menu and owner Martha Hoover's keen sense of keeping the clients happy. And who doesn't love a self-service coffee bar? There are three other locations throughout Indy.$$Market East District - New American
Meridian
The cozy but sophisticated lodgelike interior of Meridian incorporates logs from the 1880s cabin that once stood on this site. It's a fitting backdrop for the cuisine, which similarly updates and refines classic comfort foods. Our favorite: grilled lamb loin with splashes of puréed…$$$Around Town - American
Milktooth
Remember the name Jonathan Brooks. He's the innovative chef who yanked the Indianapolis food scene into the 21st century with his insistence that local foods, and local foods only (well, almost), should grace his guests' tables. His fine dining joint Beholder, set in a former auto…$$Around Town - Steakhouse
St. Elmo Steak House
Popular with celebrities and politicians, this atmospheric National Historic Landmark is the city's premier steakhouse, and has been for over 100 years. The restaurant's original tiger-oak back bar is still in operation, and the decor is straight out of 1940s Chicago, with mahogany…$$$Downtown
