Homestays -- With activity at the port almost nonexistent now and jobs scarce, tourism is seen as Amapala's last hope. Various private homes in Amapala have cleaned up their extra rooms to be rented out for visitors. Renters and taxi drivers wait at the pier for passenger boats and sell the homestays to those without a room. Some are better than others, though you might not have much choice. Most are quite simple, though they will have modern private bathrooms with cold-water showers, fans, and locking doors. Prices (L300-L400) tend to be high compared to other parts of the country for what you get in terms of amenities, though the amount of character is priceless. You can contact the Asociación de Casas de Huéspedes (tel. 504/2795-8040) to make a reservation.
