There's still much to like about the Ixtapa's long-popular "special occasion" restaurant. The terraced patio seating, set on the side of a cliff with marvelous sea views, is breathtaking, especially at sunset. The service remains formal but friendly, and it's fun to watch the oh-so-serious waiters light dishes on fire and mix drinks tableside—a welcome bit of theater. The food, however, is no longer as good as it once was, and that’s a problem in a place this pricey. Yes, it looks pretty and the idea of having a fresh lobster bisque or fish with tamarind sauce is appealing, but the results tend to be bland. The solution is to order from the excellent wine list, or to get one of those custom-cocktails whipped up for you like a magic trick, and then order an appetizer each. Oversized, they’re big enough for a meal (in most cases) and that way, you’ll be able to enjoy some nibbles in this glorious setting without feeling taken. If you’re still hungry, the dulce de leche flan is a star of the dessert menu.
