Palacio del Virrey Laserna

Jerez has aristocratic airs, and there’s no better place to glimpse that rarified world than at the palatial home of the Count of Los Andes. It was built on the foundations of an Arab palace and passed down the generations of the same family following the reconquest of Jerez by Alfonso X in the 13th century. The first Count, General José de la Serna, was a war hero who fought against Napoleon under Wellington and became the last viceroy (virrey) of Peru as the Spanish empire began to crumble. He was born and lived in this stately mansion not far from Plaza de Arenal and filled it with exquisite furniture and paintings. On a guided tour of the palace, you can learn something of Spain’s colonial past and marvel at the Neoclassical opulence of its halls and salons.
