A special, boutique hotel, the Jerusalem is known as the affordable, more personal version of the legendary, nearby American Colony Hotel. Set in an old Jerusalem mansion with Middle Eastern architecture, exposed stone walls, and hand-crafted furnishings, the hotel is located 1 long block from Damascus Gate. You enter through a walled, vine-covered garden restaurant that’s heated in winter and is a rendezvous spot for Israelis, Palestinians, and in-the-know internationals. The restaurant is famous for live, traditional Arabic music on Friday nights, with diners and waiters often dancing in the aisles. Depending on conditions, the management can arrange tours to Bethlehem and the West Bank. Ask for a room away from the restaurant, as it can get loud, but that’s about the only negative as rooms are quite handsome, with colorful, exotic coverlets, heavy wood furnishings, exposed stone walls, and arched windows. This is a Christian-owned hotel, so alcohol is served.
