Restaurants in Kenai, Soldotna and Sterling
Franchise fast-food and burger-steak-seafood places dominate in Kenai and Soldotna. Among the most popular restaurants without a name brand is Sal's Klondike Diner, 44619 Sterling Hwy. (tel. 907/262-2220), a classic Western highway diner, with big portions, fast service, cheap prices, and nothing fancy that doesn't have to be. It's open 24 hours a day all year long under a movie-style false front.
At the other end of the cultural spectrum, Veronica's Old Town Cafe, 602 Pederson Way (tel. 907/283-2725), is in a weathered old Russian building of interlocking logs in Kenai's historic area, with a tiny dining room whose low ceiling, bare wood, and cockeyed angles could not be contrived. The coffeehouse cuisine includes sandwiches, wraps, soup, and a specialty, quiche on a polenta crust. It's open in summer Monday through Thursday 9am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday till 9:30pm, with live music; in winter the hours Monday through Thursday are 10am to 3pm, while the weekends remain the same.

Charlotte's Bakery, Cafe Espresso
Local regulars fill the light, cheerful little dining room here for some of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted, and terrific salads and baked goods, too. A great place to head for a quick meal.$$At Kenai Spur Hwy - Seafood
Mykel's
This fine-dining restaurant (with no dress code—hey, it's Alaska!) offers exceptional food and extremely friendly service. Among the don't misses on the menu are the fresh oysters, spinach dip and steaks. On Wednesday's Mykel's offers wine flights paired with appetizer size portions…$$At Kenai Spur Hwy - Mediterranean/Mexican

This is an old-fashioned family restaurant with big portions of familiar food, reasonable prices, and speedy, friendly service. Besides Greek cuisine, you can get Italian or Mexican food, pizza, steaks, and crab.$$At Kenai Spur Hwy - Diner
Sal's Klondike Diner
Sal's may look like something from your own childhood: a classic Western highway diner under a movie-style false front, with big portions, fast service, cheap prices, and a model train. Sometimes that's all you need (especially the train!). It's open 24 a day, all year.$At Sterling Hwy - Diner
Suzie's Cafe
The specialty here is comfort food—think burgers, sandwiches and mounds of fries—and it's brought cheerfully and done right. Portions are humungous, so if you're not a big eater, do consider sharing. And you gotta love a place whose motto is: "Fillet and release".$$At Sterling Hwy Mile 87.2 - Cafe
Veronica's Coffee House
This tiny coffeehouse and eatery occupies one of the ancient log buildings across from the church in Kenai's Old Town, and just going inside is cool. The food is good, especially the quiche on polenta crust, and the café is open long hours, with acoustic music on weekends.$Old Town
