Southernmost Beach Resort

Why at the lower end of Duval Street is there a cluster of hostelries labeled “Southernmost”? Well, right down the block on South Street is that famous, garish, buoy-looking thingy marking the southernmost point in the continental U.S. (though actually, this is still true only if you’re counting natural landmass—the manmade Truman Annex reaches farther south). The recipient of a recent face lift, this beachfront hotel—one of the few in Key West on an actually sandy beach—is a collection of different buildings: the beachfront resort, with 127 rooms, all with views of the Atlantic, and several historic guest houses. At the resort, rooms are done up in soothing neutrals, with aqua throw pillows and fine wood and wicker furnishings.  The newly restored guesthouses are called Le Mer & Dewey House, The Avalon, and Duval Gardens. All are located off the big resort’s premises on the quieter end of Duval Street and feature a bit more personality (lots of coral pink accents, tray ceilings, and colorful, artistically mismatched furniture and wallpaper). Some have French doors that open to a heated pool. Guesthouse guests are welcome to use the amenities at the more bustling resort just a few steps away. These include the open-air Southernmost Beach Café, and two poolside bars. Because of its impressive beach, Southernmost is the site of many weddings.
