Built in the 1880s as a boarding house for workers at a nearby cigar factory, this guesthouse is tucked away on a quiet residential street a half-dozen blocks away from Duval. It’s also an easy several-block stroll from Higgs Beach—especially helpful because there’s no pool. Apart from some nice landscaping and a hammock out back, on-premises bells and whistles are at a minimum, but the ten rooms are clean, comfy, and tasteful and come with all the expected mod-cons. A definite plus is the friendliness and attentiveness of manager Derek Karevicius and his staff, not to mention Jim Brown and Jeffrey Daubman, owners since 1998. The hominess quotient is further enhanced by Snuggles the 4-pound Chihuahua (aka “Snuggles the Mighty”).
