Several blocks from the Duval Street scene, this tiny spot is worth going out of your way for its very tasty Caribbean-inspired artisan sandwiches on baguettes, the most popular a variation on the classic Cuban sandwich, the “Paseo Press” (roast pork, smoked ham, and Swiss cheese with caramelized onions, banana peppers, and aioli). Its dressings, from the aioli and savory garlic tapenade to other house-secret marinades, give the goods their luscious edge. It’s not just about sandwiches; filling platters include fish, pork, chicken scallops, prawns, and tofu. As sides, I recommend the black beans (a little sweeter than Cuban standard but still muy tasty) and especially the fire-roasted corn slathered with aioli, grated cheese, and paprika. Owner Lorenzo Lorenzo (no, not a typo) actually has two of these in Seattle, where he was settled as a child refugee from the Castro dictatorship, but in 2011 decided to open this one in the city where he spent time as a young man. And more than a few Conchs are grateful. One drawback: Seating could be better—it’s just a kind of picnic table outside.
