Pepe’s

The island’s oldest still-operating eatery was founded by Pepe Peláez back in 1909, and it’s definitely got that old-timey look and feel, with rustic wooden booths, tables, and all manner of Key Westiana crowding the walls and hanging from the ceiling. Another good option is the brick patio alongside, which besides its big ol’ spreading mahogany in the middle is also cooled by canvas shades overhead and an enormous fan at back. Whether it’s French toast or a hearty omelet for breakfast/brunch (which some consider Pepe’s best meals), a fresh fish sandwich at lunchtime, or a nice juicy dinner steak, both quality and portions are satisfying. Apalachicola oysters from Florida’s panhandle are a house specialty. There's often a wait for tables, especially in high season and on weekends.
