Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands (two islands -- one big, one small) are part of the same archipelago within the Terengganu Marine Park. Located to the north of Redang, they are not as easy to access as Redang, because there's no easy airport access. It's about an hour's ride to the jetty from Kuala Terengganu, then a speedboat to the island.

There are many bungalow operators on these islands -- most of these places are simple huts with poor excuses for beds and scarcely anything else for convenience. For some reason, these small bungalow operators have not learned how to handle waste and rubbish, and will eventually spoil the environment that draws people here in the first place.

Perhentian Island Resort, with its own private beach, is your best option on Perhentian. The resort has 106 air-conditioned rooms, housed in cabanas, and a restaurant that serves buffet meals three times daily. Activities are organized through their PADI dive center, plus there's snorkeling, tennis, trekking, and nonmotorized water sports. They will arrange your speedboat transfers to and from the jetty. Note: The resort is closed during the rainy season from November through February. Contact Perhentian Island Resort at tel. 09/691-1111 or www.perhentianislandresort.net. Rates are RM310 to RM385 for a double chalet.
