Serious bird-watchers, nature lovers, and fishermen should consider this very remote lodging in the tiny lagoon-side village of Caño Negro. Bordering the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, this simple place offers easy access to the lakes, lagoons, and waterways of these beautiful, low-lying wetlands (one of the best places in the region to spot a jabiru stork). Dozens of tours are offered. The rooms themselves are roomy, clean, and cool, with large sliding glass doors opening on to a small patio overlooking the well-tended gardens. To get there, drive toward Los Chiles, and just before reaching the town, follow the well-marked signs for Caño Negro Natural Lodge and the wildlife refuge. The final 18km (11 miles) is on a rugged dirt road.
