Although it’s not exactly at the end of the road, La Laguna del Lagarto Lodge certainly feels like it. Tucked into a far northern section of Costa Rica, close to the Nicaraguan border, this rustic lodge caters primarily to bird-watchers. The bird count here tops 390 species, including the rare green macaw. Rooms are adequate and little more, with low-lying wooden bedframes sporting thin mattresses, and not much in the way of furnishings, decor, and amenities. The lodge features two man-made lakes and keeps a fleet of canoes. It also has an extensive network of hiking trails and offers a range of active adventure tours and guided hikes.
