One of the hidden treasures of La Rochelle, this lovely museum is set within an enormous (2,500 sq. m/26,910 sq. ft.) mansion in the heart of town and surrounded by lovely botanical gardens. This is truly a museum to get lost in. Expect an array of taxidermied animals, African masks, maps of prehistoric migration patterns, and more. They are all part of the 10,000 or so objects, brought back by La Rochelle’s 17th-century traders on their ships. The gardens outside are part of the exhibition, with plants from many of the same far-flung locations.
