If you'd like to step outside your hotel in the evening, I recommend you stay on the beach, particularly if you're looking for a more upscale hotel; downtown, pickings in those categories are slim and nightlife is as serene as the city's name implies. The 6km (3 3/4-mile) string of accommodations running down Avenida del Mar isn't particularly attractive, but rooms are comfortable, and they're directly across the street from the beaches. The cuisine in this area by far outshines that offered downtown, too, and here you'll be able to sip a sunset cocktail on the beachfront. Plus you'll be much closer to the attractively restored English Quarter in Coquimbo, the region's newest nightlife hub.
