This panoramic, rustic spot in the hills above Tremezzo is a meat-lover's paradise. You'll find game, steak, and lakefish—but not a single pasta dish on the menu. (Although fear not, carb fans, you can order polenta.) Family-run and intimate, La Fagurida serves traditional country fare and cucina di montagna (mountain cuisine) in a charming, farmhouse-style dining room filled with copper pots or on a terrace with sweeping views over Tremezzo and the lake. Hearty fare includes roast rabbit, fiorentina (T-bone) steaks, lavarello burro e salvia (a trout-like lakefish with butter and sage), plus polenta uncia (with gorgonzola, butter, garlic, and sage), simple grilled vegetables, and appetizers of cured local meats. All of this is served with excellent wines that are stored in the restaurant's vaulted stone cellar, which you can take a peek at if you ask. Note that you'll need a car to get here, but the drive—along a winding, scenic road—is half the fun. You can walk from Tremezzo, but it is a hike. After your meal, work off some of that rich food with a walk into the cute hamlet of Rogaro, a few minutes down the road.
