Casa de Santo António de Britiande

A lovingly restored 16th-century manor house that was once the retreat of Franciscan friars, the hotel stands surrounded by 5 hectares (12 acres) of garden planted with flowers, vines and fruit trees. Beside the pool is a blaze of lavender. The owners have counted 26 species of wild birds in the garden. Inside the thick stone walls the house is softly lit with coach lamps. Antique-style furnishings include big wooden beds with embroidered cotton covers and splashes of color provided by traditional Portuguese fabrics. You can sample still and sparkling wines grown on the owners' estates, accompanied by homemade delicacies: Lamego ham pies, smoked hams and sausages, or a full meal of local treats headed by meats roasted in the wood-fired oven. A five minute drive south from downtown Lamego.
