The ruins of an old limestone kiln provide the backdrop for the open-air Theater at Lime Kiln on Borden Road off U.S. 60 W. (tel. 800/594-TIXX [8499] or 540/436-7088; www.theateratlimekiln.com), which presents musicals, plays, and concerts from March through September.

You can joint W&L students and faculty for famous visiting artists in concerts, plays, and recitals in the Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts, on the W&L campus (tel. 540/458-8000; http://lenfest.wlu.edu). The schedule is released prior to each school year.

You can also relive the 1950s at Hull's Drive-In, 4 miles north of downtown on U.S. 11 (tel. 540/436-2621; www.hullsdrivein.com), one of the nation's few remaining outdoor movie theaters. It shows double features Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from April through October.
