Centre de la Mémoire, Oradour-sur-Glane

★★★ MUSEUM—It’s well worth the 22km drive (13 miles) north of Limoges to see this hard-hitting WWII place of remembrance - part museum, part village left exactly as it was found after the Nazis decimated both its population and buildings on June 10 1944. The unique, fully-preserved settlement—chilling and moving in equal measures—is where 642 people (247 of which were children) were massacred in the worst Nazi killings of civilians recorded in France. The museum carefully documents the rise of Nazism and France’s role under the Vichy Regime, before linking events to what happened in Oradour.  Not for the faint hearted, but it’s an incredibly important place to see.
