The chief distinction of this attractive town strung along Route 6, west of Waterbury, is its over 30 high-end antiques stores. On weekends in good weather, the main road is clogged with cars full of antiquers trolling for treasures, and progress can be slow. The Woodbury Antiques Dealers Association (www.antiqueswoodbury.com) offers a directory, which is available in most shops, and an online database listing shops by categories ranging from "folk art" to "wagons, buggies, and sleighs."

Antiquing
Shoppers are drawn here for antiques and collectibles of every sort, from funky to obscure to elegant. To winnow down the list, pick up the directory produced by the Woodbury Antiques Dealers Association (www.antiqueswoodbury.com) at one of the member stores.
Start off in the building at 289 Main St., at the intersection of routes 6 and 317, which contains Jennings & Rohn Antiques (tel. 203/263-3775). European paintings and furnishings from the 16th century to 1960 are on view, as well as lighting fixtures and some Art Deco. At Martell & Suffin Antiques (tel. 203/263-1913), the owners favor 18th- and early-19th-century European furniture, as well as Asian works of art.
Drive south on Main Street (Rte. 6) to the notable Wayne Pratt Antiques, 346 Main St. (tel. 203/263-5676; www.prattantiques.com), which specializes in 18th-century American furniture, much of it museum-level Chippendale and Queen Anne pieces. Some items are within reach for the rest of us, like the Chinese porcelain boxes for around $12.
Of similar high order are the offerings at Country Loft Antiques, 557 Main St. (tel. 203/266-4500; www.countryloftantiques.com), largely 19th-century French furnishings and objets displayed in a fine old barn. Wares run from biscuit tins to armoires, bolts of fabric to 18th-century dining tables. Be sure to look into the basement, outfitted as a wine cellar.
On most Saturdays in decent weather, the Woodbury Antiques & Flea Market (tel. 203/263-2841) sets up in a parking lot at the south end of town.
