Charles Darwin made one of history’s most important voyages, but once back in England, he barely left his home here in the idyllic parish village of Downe. Upstairs you’ll find out about the man and his life (did you know the scientist who theorized about mutation married his own first cousin?) and downstairs, guided by an audio tour narrated by Sir David Attenborough, you’ll explore his study, his greenhouse, and his enchanting garden of lawns and breezy fields. No wonder he never left again. There are two charming country pubs to enjoy while you wait for the bus back; your Oyster card will get you here.
