Lime Tree Hotel

This once-frumpy double Georgian guesthouse near Victoria Coach Station is now run by a moderate-priced Spanish chain, Room Mate Hotels, which amplifies the boutique, country-style hotel aspirations set by its previous owners but has removed the owner-operator attentiveness that made it successful. The conjoined brick townhouses are historic, so no lift is permitted, rooms are of various sizes, and stairs are plentiful (there’s also no A/C, which most times is no issue), but everything is updated with slate-and-rose colors, safe, and touches such as bedside reading lights (but no tubs; only showers). If you have a first-floor room on the front, you’ll have a small balcony over busy Ebury Street; in the quieter back, you’ll overlook The Buttery, the house cafe in the cute flower garden. A basement room is larger than the others but has no view, and there are triples and singles available. Paying more than £300 would be too much, but around £200, which can be found 2–3 months ahead, is acceptable.
