We all claim to want an old-fashioned English inn, but do you really want the chintz, the lace curtains, and the blank walls? In the thick of Smithfield’s nightlife (so bring earplugs if you require them), this fun little find took a tiny old-fashioned pub hotel and upgraded it so it only looks old—brass saddle-bowl sinks, mullioned windows, wood floors, and in the case of the Smithfield room, a freestanding tub in the room (that fills fast), yet they’re also current with sound systems and flatscreen TVs. This is a case of making a leap forward by looking back. Downstairs, of course, there’s a Victorian-era pub of mahogany, brass, and etched glass. It was also upgraded from the authentic original.
