The Henrietta Experimental Hotel
Don’t mind the name—it’s not an experiment; that’s a reference to the Experimental Group, the hospitality outfit that runs it. The Henrietta’s in a peerless location on a mostly pedestrianized Covent Garden street, above the Henri restaurant/bar, lively with customers. Upstairs and at an annex across the line (there are lifts), you’re happily ensconced in soundproofed quarters. Even if the rooms are all different sizes, their vibe consistently serves Comfy Modern Art Deco, nothing too flashy. Choose a unit with built-in seating by its huge front-facing windows (I prefer the namesake, The Henrietta, which has a tubbed bathroom that’s larger than some whole hotel rooms in London), send down for cocktails and food, and you could spend many romantic hours people-watching and reading. Despite the small size, staff is on duty round the clock and is unusually attentive to welcoming service. This is a hotel where it’s a relief to return after a long day—not too big, not too fussy, but approachably inviting and personal-feeling.
