The Rookery Hotel

In the 1990s, three derelict houses and shops were converted into a hotel that tells the story of England past: Georgian and 17th-century oak and four-poster beds, antique desks, era wood paneling and top-line attention and discretion—the owners fashioned this tucked-away realm of open fireplaces and polite staff that give a sense of what it must have been like to live with money in the 19th century. It’s elegant, but not like a stuffy dowager aunt's parlor—more like an eccentric professor's study. Each huge room is a unique, characterful surprise of Persian rugs, gilt-framed mirrors, and oil paintings, but not neglectful of modern necessities. There’s no restaurant, but you can get food brought to your room, as your breakfast will be. The Clerkenwell location used to be off the path for visitors, but the 2022 arrival of the Elizabeth Line changed that, and now it's a terrific home base from which you can zoom across town in mere minutes.
