Boisdale
Richly done up in red and green like an all-year manifestation of the coziest Christmas, Boisdale makes a year-round gift of the best of Scottish cuisine, from whisky to neeps. It’s big on brilliantly prepared fish (the delicately fried calamari with pickle and Tellicherry chili mayo is a starter standout), aged steaks, and oysters, but the accompaniments are compelling as well, even when they’re as minor as the rich yellow table butter or the thrice-cooked chips with Bloody Mary ketchup. It’s all served atop crisp tablecloths by heedful servers in rooms festooned with etchings and antlers—a masculine scene, to be sure, and the setting for many a power lunch by homesick Scots working in London, many of whom seem to know the staff by name. There may be no finer place in the city to try properly prepared haggis—you can even get a vegetarian version of it as a burger. And surprise—it also supports an excellent jazz-and-standards cabaret (ticketed separately) that attracts excellent vocalists and musicians nearly nightly.
