Dishoom
Dishoom, a boisterous collision of Irani and Indian foods, has been nothing less than a smash in Britain since its 2010 debut. Now it has seven locations in London, all popular as go-tos for a moderately priced meal. Far from being a standard curry slinger, its modern flavors bend expectation, and certainly back up the success. An accommodating range of dishes comes sweet and tangy, with ginger and garlic, grilled or green, from kebabs to tikkas to Bombay street food; many people order two or three. They’re backed up by a smart cocktail list of original concoctions such as the Kohinoor Fizz (made of gin, gooseberry syrup with lime, and a kiss of Aperol).
The Covent Garden location (12 Upper St., Martin’s Lane, WC2; 020/7420-9320; Tube: Leicester Square) often has an off-putting line down the block, so I prefer this one, which has a full cellar bar where you can wait for your table and also gives you a good excuse to explore the newly rehabbed and on-trend warehouses of Granary Square. The location just off Carnaby Street, near Regent Street shopping, is also prime (22 Kingly St., W1; 020/7420-9322; Tube: Oxford Circus
