Emilia's Crafted Pasta

There’s not much good to eat around the Tower of London, so this marvel is most welcome. Just east over the approach to Tower Bridge is an atmospheric maritime enclave known as St Katharine Docks, dug by hand for cargo boats in the 1820s. Under cast-iron columns in a former goods vault, this speedy-service open kitchen makes succulent and indulgent pasta fresh daily with no preservatives. It’s easy to love the truffled cacio e pepe, pancetta carbonara, green beans bathed in creamy green pesto, and ethereal tiramisu. Emilia’s is ultra-casual but tiny (just a few tables that spill onto the waterfront in good weather, plus six bar seats), so make a booking in advance for your Tower trip. Its neighbors on the Docks include some other worthwhile cafes and premium coffee shops.

Another useful location is a 10-minute walk north (77 Alie St., E1; 020/7702-9944; Tube: Aldgate East or Aldgate), and a third is near Madame Tussauds at 215 Baker Street, NW1 (020/3340-0694; Tube: Baker Street).
