This little restaurant may only carry the humble "trattoria" sign above its door, but the kitchen can justly claim to be among Lucca's most creative. You will find traditional Lucchese items on the menu, but Canuleia's strength lies in taking the best of the Italian peninsula -- and beyond -- and combining it in creative ways. Start, perhaps, with sformatino di pecorino con salsa di pere (pecorino cheese soufflé with pear salsa), followed by a risotto alla pernice (with partridge) and petto d'anatra salsa teriyaki (duck breast with teriyaki sauce). The informal shaded garden is a delightful spot in warmer months.
