Switzerland's most popular museum and the best of its kind on the continent, Lucerne's Verkehrshaus (Transport Museum) is situated a short bus, train, or boat ride away from the main train station. You can also walk there in about 30 minutes from the Old Town.Every possible form of transportation you can imagine is on display, from old rolling stock and airplanes to ski lifts and spaceships. Highlights of the museum include the SS Rigi, the oldest surviving form of motorized transport in the country, and the wonderful Road Transport Hall, covered in 344 traffic signs. The sprawling, but very well organized, space has bicycles available to the public. At the complex's eastern end you'll find the Planetarium, with constellations, a solar and lunar eclipse, and space-travel simulation. There's also a small museum dedicated to the Swiss artist Hans Erni, complete with sculpture garden, plus an IMAX theater. Eating options are good, with a simple and well-stocked cafeteria (Mercato), plus a more formal restaurant, the Piccard.
