What is this curious monument—an Egyptian temple dating from the 2nd century b.c.—doing in Madrid? The processional gateways and stone shrine were donated to Spain by the Egyptian government as a thank you for helping save the monuments of Nubia following the construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s. They were transplanted block by block to the Parque del Oeste, north of the Palacio Real, in 1972. Spanning a tranquil pond, it’s a lovely spot to watch the sun setting over Madrid.
