CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha

Step through the great wooden doors off bustling Calle Atocha into this elegant hideaway in a restored 19th century residential palace. A flagstone passage with 20-foot ceilings (formerly the carriage entryway) leads to the reception area, dominated by an impressive landmarked wooden staircase topped with a skylight. Each of its 34 rooms has a different layout, but all are spacious. Entry level rooms average 350 square feet, while the vast Cool suite includes a private balcony and spa bath. Note that some top floor rooms have sloping ceilings and skylights rather than full windows. The décor is a nod to Art Deco, with parquet floors, brass accents, and glossy marble side tables. Black-and-white-tiled bathrooms feature walk-in showers and desirable free toiletries. The leafy courtyard with outdoor pool is a tranquil spot for an à la carte cooked breakfast. Warning: Some rooms on the top (fourth) floor have sloping ceilings (mind your head!) and skylights rather than full windows.
